Once an IEP Meeting has occurred, it is time to carry it out. Now is when the special education and related services as listed in the IEP are in full effect! This page explores what happens after the IEP meeting.
THE IEP - AFTER THE MEETING

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE MEETING?
FINALIZING THE IEP DOCUMENTS
The school team will finalize the IEP based on what was discussed in the meeting. Parents should receive a copy of the finalized IEP for review and signature.
PARENTAL CONSENT (IF REQUIRED)
If this is the student’s first IEP, parents must provide written consent before services can begin. If it’s a revision of an existing IEP (ANNUAL IEP, TRIENNIAL IEP, AMENDMENTS, ETC), new, revised services will not begin until parents provide written consent. If parents refuse to sign on an existing IEP, previous services will continue until the dispute is resolved.
IMPLEMENTATION OF SERVICES
Teachers and service providers (e.g., speech therapists, special education staff) receive copies of the IEP and begin implementing accommodations, modifications, and services. General education teachers must also follow the IEP, ensuring the student’s needs are met in the classroom.
PROGRESS MONITORING
The school tracks the student’s progress toward their IEP goals and provides updates to parents. Progress reports are often shared during report card periods or at agreed-upon intervals.
FOLLOW UP & COMMUNICATION
Parents and teachers should maintain open communication about how the IEP is working. If issues arise, parents can request additional meetings to discuss adjustments.
ANNUAL IEP REVIEW & REEVALUATION
The IEP team must meet at least once a year to review and update the IEP as needed. A full reevaluation is required at least every three years to determine if the student still qualifies for special education services.
