WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE MEETING?
FINALIZING THE 504 PLAN
The school team will finalize the 504 based on what was discussed in the meeting. Parents should receive a copy of the finalized 504 Plan for review and signature.
IMPLEMENTATION OF ACCOMMODATIONS AND/OR SERVICES
Once you have the 504 Plan in place, it’s important to keep track of your student’s progress. Is the student consistently getting all the accommodations outlined in the 504 plan? Are the accommodations helping your student to make progress in school and take part in other school activities? Does your student have any new challenges that should be evaluated?
PROGRESS MONITORING
Track the student’s progress toward their IEP goals and provide updates to parents. Progress reports are often shared during report card periods or at agreed-upon intervals.
FOLLOW UP & COMMUNICATION
Maintain open communication about how the 504 is working. If issues arise, inform parents and discuss adjustments as needed.
REVIEW & REEVALUATION
If you think the 504 Plan needs to be changed, talk with your student’s parent(s) and the 504 Coordinator.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PARENTS DON'T AGREE
Sometimes parents and the school disagree on whether a child should have a 504 plan and/or what should be in it. If this happens, start by setting up a meeting to talk to the parents.
