Although summer is almost over, and school is about to start, I wanted to share this. I wish I had seen it earlier, but something to look forward to for your next vacation, or weekender! I love taking my students to the pumpkin patch. For my students who are ambulatory, navigating the pumpkin patch is a breeze. For those of my students who are in wheelchairs… well, that is a different story! And, the bigger the student, the bigger the wheelchair; the harder it is to traverse uneven terrain, rocks, sand, and more. I cannot begin to tell you how many pumpkin patch, park, nature hike field trips my para-educators and I have taken our students on where we struggled with wheelchairs and getting them around. I am not one to let my students miss out, so we would drag, carry, lift, and do whatever else was necessary to make sure all of our students were able to participate and enjoy the field trips.
The same holds true for my parents. I have a lot of parents who love to take their students on hikes, to the beach, and other places that does not support wheelchair accessibility. I found a potential resource that might change that and bring a new meaning to vacationing accessibility! I want one for my classroom!!!!!
This video explains how the concept came about.
