It’s summertime, which means vacations, long hikes, swimming, road trips, and so much more. Although we have come a long way when it comes to technology and accessibility, accessibility to this big beautiful world that we live in is often a challenge for kids and adults with disabilities and their families. As teachers of students with severe disabilities, accessibility is something we struggle with as well. It is often lack of accessibility that prevents some of our students from attending school trips to places like Sly Park and thoroughly enjoying places like the pumpkin patch. It is that same lack that prevents families from enjoying certain vacations. There are so many things to consider, with the biggest being wheelchair accessibility. Even with a lot of planning and preparation, certain places, and certain activities remain inaccessible. But there is hope.
The key to accessibility is in a statement made by a young man by the name of Kevan, “the world was made accessible by not changing it, the world was made accessible by figuring out how to change my situation.” Kevan has spinal muscular atrophy, and with the help of some friends, has been able to realize dream vacations come true. I wanted to share this to inspire and hopefully provide ideas. After all, it’s when we work together we find them!!! Enjoy!
